Meet Ashley Rosilez
Education?
I attend Templeton High School and take a few classes at Cuesta College. In the fall I will be going to Mount Holyoke College double majoring in Biological Sciences and Studio Art.
At Mount Holyoke, I plan on double majoring in Biological Sciences and Studio Art and be apart of the pre-health program. This year, I have been interning at Creston Large Animal Veterinary. Dr. Grewal and Dr. Masch have been so kind and generous to let me come along to aid in procedures and exams. After interning with them for some time, I have become even more interested in studying veterinary.
How did you get into 4H?
When I was little, my mom let us pick out some layer chickens. We adored them so much. When summer came around, we went to the California Mid-State Fair and watched 4-H poultry showmanship. Everyone was having an amazing time, with their chickens and their friends. I knew that after watching and hearing how much knowledge the 4-Hers had of poultry, I wanted to be a 4-H showman!
What have you raised?
I have personally raised poultry and market lambs for the California Mid-State Fair and other livestock shows. I also have experience in raising pigs and steer (since my sisters have raised them, I know my way around them).
Offices held?
In 4-H, I became our county’s first Healthy Living Officer. The years after that, I have also held offices as President, and Past President. This year, I am currently one of San Luis Obispo’s 4-H County ambassadors. Due to COVID cancelling many of our events, we are going through and planning the county’s Achievement Night in the fall.
Awards won in 4H, school, community etc.?
Some of my favorite awards that I have won in 4-H are: Youth of Distinction (2017), Champion Suffolk Lamb at CMSF (2018), and Record Book State Medalist (2018). At school I have also been awarded the Top Scholar Award (2016) for maintaining at least a 4.0 GPA through the year (Only awarded to Freshman students).
You enjoy art, why?
My mom could say that I have been creating artwork ever since I could hold a pencil. At every opportunity, I would start drawing or painting. One of my favorite things to do is to go outside with my sketch pad or a canvas and create anything that comes to my mind. From elementary school through high school, I also love creating pottery. Anything from pendants to sculptures. It is a very versatile medium that I love to use when creating art pieces to give to friends and family. There is something about art that I have always loved. Art is fluid, it can be whatever you want it to be, and with that freedom, there are endless ways to create. Art history is also interesting, studying different painters, eras and mediums. Art has always been a place where I can escape from homework or stressful situations. While an English paper is graded on arguing certain points, sentence structure and grammar, art is what one wants it to be. There is no template to create the perfect piece of art.
Do you compete on your horse?
I love to compete with my horse! Ditto, my horse, has taught me how to be a better rider to be patient, and especially to be brave in times of doubt. When I can, I compete at horse shows at Paso Robles Horse Park. When we are not at shows you may find us practicing equitation, lead changes, or schooling some jumps. At Mount Holyoke, I hope to be on the Hunt Seat Equestrian Team!
